Popeye the Sailor: A Haul In One (1956)
Popeye and Bluto are, believe it or not, pals and partners in a moving company. (Maybe it's because Popeye isn't squinting here.) Anyhow, Olive has made the mistake of hiring them. She hasn't finished packing yet, so the boys, smitten as soon as she answers the door, compete to help her. Once packed, they compete to move more impressive piles of her belongings. Popeye easily wins these contests, even though Bluto locks him in the van at one point. At the end, Bluto socks Popeye into the piano, then into a table; though he hardly seems to need it, Popeye still eats his spinach, then thrashes Bluto

Popeye the Sailor: Cookin with Gags (1955)

The boys are taking Olive on a picnic. It's April 1, and Bluto plays a series of "jokes" on Popeye, though of course they go beyond the bounds of acceptability, particularly once they get to the picnic grounds; Bluto puts gasoline on the fire he asks Popeye to light and swaps a beehive for the lemonade. Bluto then launches a cruel joke against Olive and frames Popeye. The capper: he replaces Popeye's spinach with a joke can, and runs off with Olive for some canoeing. But Popeye gets the last laugh with an inflatable sea monster

Cartoon Brew posts the first image from Popeye's new special (right) and also offers its forums open for discussion. The picture, showing the spinach loving sailor man in his new 3D incarnation, comes from this month's print issue of Time Magazine. They also outline the show online, which actually sounds a little too clever for its own good:

Popeye "The cartoon strongman and his hulking nemesis Bluto have been buffed up by CGI for a Fox TV special due next fall. Though the movie celebrates the sailor's 75th anniversary, he has been well preserved by a life of 'no coffee, a lot of spinach and that sea air', says Mad About You's Paul Reiser, who is co-writer and producer. In Popeye's Voyage: The Search for Pappy, the updated Popeye will hunt for his dad and confront relationship issues. For example, Reiser asks, 'with a woman in his life, how does he get away with just sailing all the time?'"

Popeye was created by Elzie Segar a cartoonist who wrote the strip Thimble Theatre in the late teens and early twenties. This strip originally had the characters of Olive Oyl, Ham Gravy (Olive's first boyfriend), Cole and Nana Oyl (Olive's parents) and Castor Oyl. On January 17, 1929, Popeye made his first appearance in the strip. His first words, a reply to the question, "Are you a sailor?" ; were "Ja think I'm a cowboy!" Needless to say, Popeye went on to be the most popular character in the strip and one of the greatest comic characters ever. In the thirties, the Fleischer Brothers (who created Betty Boop) introduced Popeye as a character in Popeye the Sailor Long after (alas) Betty was forgotten the Sailor stayed in our public consciousness.
